Erskine
Founded in 1916, Erskine has provided nursing and medical care for former members of our Armed Forces through two world wars and the more recent conflicts and peace keeping initiatives of the twentieth and twenty first centuries. Re-building shattered lives, restoring dignity and providing first class care to ex-Service men and women both young and old have been the cornerstones on which Erskine has built an unrivalled reputation.
Clevedon Secondary Fly The Erskine Flag At Dress In Purple Day
History pupils from the school have enjoyed several sessions throughout the year interviewing some of Erskine’s WW2 veterans, raising money for Erskine, and sharing the potatoes grown in the school garden.
The Second World War is now taught as part of our curriculum and Mr MacKay, principal teacher of History, thought it would be an excellent opportunity for the kids to hear first hand experiences from some of the brave ex-Service personnel who fought for their country so long ago, bringing their history lessons to life!
We then compiled what they had learned from their interview sessions into reports and presented them to our classmates. The Erskine residents enjoyed meeting with us and having a bit of a blether too.
Those or us who didn’t make it to Erskine for the interviews were treated to a presentation at the school by 91 year old Erskine volunteer Isobel Kirkwood who was a primary school teacher during the Blitz in London.
Peter Macfarlane, Erskine fundraiser, said: "The children enjoyed ‘living history’ and understanding more about what it must have been like to like through WW2. It was equally rwarding for the residents who love chatting and talking about their experiences. All the children left Erskine chattering about what they had learned."
We have continued our involvement with Erskine by holding a dress in purple day and having an Erskine stand at their annual school fete. These raised £200 for Erskine.
We have also conitued our visits to Erskine. On our last visit Joanne McGinley took along some organically grown potatoes which she grew in the school garden.
