Higher Course elements are taught in the following sequence.

Cell Biology

Genetics and Adaptation

Control and Regulation

The course consists of three 40 hour units.

As with all Higher Still frameworks a further 40 hours are required for consolidation of knowledge, development of problem solving/ data handling skills, report writing and assessment.

 

Unit 1 Cell Biology

  • Cell variety and function
  • Respiration and Photosynthesis
  • DNA and protein synthesis
  • Viruses and cell defence mechanisms

 

Unit 2 Genetics and Adaptation

  • Cell reproduction and genetics
  • Evolution
  • Maintaining a water balance
  • Obtaining food and coping with dangers

 

Unit 3 Control and Regulation

  • Genetic control
  • The effect of hormones, chemicals and light on growth
  • Physiological homeostasis
  • Population dynamics

 

Three learning outcomes are assessed

  • Collection and analysis of information and data

 

Entrance requirement: 1 / 2 Standard Grade Biology, Chemistry, Physics

This course will develop aspects of the content of Standard Grade Biology and will provide a challenge to highly motivated students wishing to undertake the study of Biology / Science at University.

Employment opportunities abound in the numerous and diverse specialisms of medicine, the biotechnological and pharmaceutical industries, genetic engineering, agriculture, horticulture, forensics and environmental management.
