In the upper school Chemistry may be studied at National Levels 3, 4 or 5. Each level has three units to be studied.

National 3

1. Chemical Changes

In this unit, learners will be able to develop scientific skills and knowledge of chemicals in our world. They will study the common elements and their properties and chemical reactions anbd how this relates to their position in the Periodic Table. Focussing on everyday elements, compounds and mixtures they will learn about chemical reactions and word equations. The reactions of acids and bases and their environmental impact will be studied thorough practical work and investigation.

2. Natures Chemistry

In this unit, learners will research the rich supply of natural resources whcih are used by us all. They will investigate fossil fuels and their alternatives in order to appreciate the concept of sustainability. They will investigate plants as a source of oils, carbohydrates and nurtrients and how these relate to everyday life. One of these processes will be the focus of a Practical Investigation.

3. Chemistry and Society

In this unit , learners will investigate materials thorough a variety of learning acitivities. Various environemental issues will be studied relating to the reactions, applications and corrosion of metals. This will include their use in chemical cells, the uses of metals, plastics and new materials in industry and their impact on the world about us.
