Our Aims

  • To encourage pupils to aim high and to work hard to achieve this aim
  • To develop pupils' confidence in using Mathematics
  • To teach pupils how to calculate;

                      - mentally

                      - using paper and pencil

                      - using calculators and computers

  • For pupils and teachers to make use of modern technology where appropriate
  • To allow pupils to investigate, to make generalisations and to solve problems
  • To emphasise the practical nature of Mathematics and to help pupils understand the importance of Mathematics in modern life.

Overview of Courses

S1/2 - Follow the Broad General Education at levels 2 and 3, whilst extending the learning where appropriate for our people to begin their journey towards National Qualifications.

S3/4 - Pupil capitalise on their previous learning in the BGE, beginning their path to a National award. Developing the skills and knowledge required for success at the end of S4. Courses available in S4:

National 3 Applications of Mathematics

National 4 Mathematics

National 5 Mathematics

S5/6 - Pupils can use their previous knowledge to progress to the most appropriate course of study in their Senior Phase, these include:

National 4 Mathematics

National 5 Mathematics

National 5 Unit only course in Numeracy -

the above course does not result in an overall course award but provides pupils with some of the skills required for subsequent study at National 5. It allows pupils the time to practice and raise their confidence in these prior to embarking on that course of study. They are awarded a unit award from the SQA at the end of the year.

Celebrating Success in the department of Mathematics and Numeracy

Last year our young people took part in the annual United kingdom Mathematics Trust Maths Competition at both junior and intermediate levels. This is an opportunity for them to test their skills in problem solving and independent thinking while using the skills in Maths and Numeracy that they are developing across Cleveden. Their hard work and commitment resulted in an excellent performance all round and the successful candidates were awarded at the annual prIzegiving ceremony in September. WELL DONE GUYS, SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!

Maths Week Scotland 2018

September 10 - 16

https://blogs.gov.scot/making-maths-count/

Maths Week Scotland is a national initiative to encourage everyone to think about Maths and investigate how we use it in our lives. Here in Cleveden our young people got to take part in a variety of different and fun events which challenged and entertained them throughout the week. These included heart rate investigations in PE, using statistics in RME and Social Subjects, drawing Escher tessellations in Art and design, clock and the time in Modern Languages and lots more. We were also treated to a brilliant presentation from BAE systems and a joke a day on twitter. For more information take a look at #mathsweekglasgow

On the 14th May... That's Pi day for all the Maths geeks out there! We celebrated World Maths Day by competing with young people around the world to test our basic Maths and Numeracy skills

NUMERACY

As part of the school's curriculum we endeavour to provide our young people with a comprehensive education in Numeracy across learning within Cleveden. To do this we have established cross curricular links and used these to raise pupil awareness of how they use their numeracy skills in otherways and develop themselves as a confident individual.

Numeracy and Employability Carousel - 8th February 2017

All of our S2 pupils had an opportunity to meet professionals from the world of work and discuss how numeracy is important to them in their daily life and career. They also took part in challenges and investigations set by our visitors, showing them how these skills are used.
