S1

Pupils in S1 are given tasters on each of the classroom instruments - Keyboard, Glockenspiel, Guitar and Drum Kit.

Pupils spend 4 lessons on each instrument, learning how to read the notation, play the instrument properly and gain a good understanding of melody, harmony and rhythm.  At the end of each 4 lesson block, the pupils perform the piece as a class.  Pupils are then given the opportunity to choose which 2 instruments they want to build further skills on and one period a week is dedicated to performing.  The second period of the week is used to build skills in understanding music, composition, musical literacy and music technology.

NATIONAL 3 - 5 Music Performing

Our S4-6 pupils are currently preparing for their National courses.  They come to Music 4 times per week.

The layout of the National 3-5 course has changed recently to meet the requirements of our new courses.  Pupils build skills on 2 instruments for 2 periods each week.  The remaining two periods are spent working on  composition unit, learning to write in a number of different genres and the other period involves the study of musical concepts.

Pupils complete a pupil profile every period, which is a requirement of the course.  This profile allows pupils to record the work they have completed and also to evaluate their progress throughout the course.

Pupils are assessed throughout the year on their knowledge and understanding of performing, composing and understanding music.  They are required to pass each of these units before they can be put forward for the National course.
